Flat plate collectors

Solar thermal systems are an incredibly cost effective addition to any building’s solar heating and hot water system. They're suitable as a pre-heat solution, for communal and distributed systems or for individual properties.

Flat plate collectors or panels are the most common type of solar thermal collector. These are primarily used to heat domestic hot water. The flat plate panels are thin panels of metal that absorb sunlight and are  positioned just below a sheet of glass. In addition, many include a heat retaining fluid. The metal panels absorb the sun’s energy. It's then transferred to the fluid and pumped through the system.

The advantage of flat panel systems is that they are very robust and long lasting, so suitable for most applications and projects.

This is a well-tried and tested technology, suitable for both new-build and retrofit. MGC Technical service offer bespoke packages providing the best renewable energy solutions for the individual requirements.

Evacuated Tubes

Evacuated tubes are glass tubes painted with reflective coating. Inside the tubes a vacuum is created within that surrounds thin strips of twisted metal which act as an absorber of the sun's energy.

Convection and conduction heat loss is significantly reduced by the vacuum. This means that these type of systems are more efficient than flat plate collectors. And as this efficiency is heightened in colder conditions, they are ideal for the relatively cooler British climate.

The tubes are quite expensive to replace however, so this product needs to be treated with care, especially during installation. And that's where we come in!

MGC Technical service offer bespoke packages providing the best renewable energy solutions for the individual requirements.

Regardless of the system that you choose, significant cost savings can be made. Obviously during the summer, solar thermal panels are at their most efficient and can produce most or all of your hot water demand.

Even in the spring and autumn, by pre-heating the water in your cylinder, you can greatly reduce the amount of energy needed to heat your water with these systems.

And although the sunlight is weaker and there is less of it in Winter, a solar thermal system will still make a contribution to your water heating.

As a guide we recommend around 1m2 of solar collector area for each individual in the property to ensure your hot water needs are met. And as currently a typical flat plate panel is around 3m2 a typical family of 4 would be looking at needing 2 collectors. (roughly 25 evacuated tubes if you choose this system).
